Strata

Terms of Use

Last updated 31 August 2026.

Strata is published on the App Store by Trent Vukich and is operated through TMCM Estates, LLC, a limited liability company registered in Alabama, United States, operating from Portugal ("we", "us"). The App Store lists Trent Vukich as the seller; TMCM Estates, LLC is the business behind Strata. By using Strata you agree to these terms, which form an agreement between you and TMCM Estates, LLC. Apple's Standard End User License Agreement also applies to the app itself.

What Strata is, and what it is not

Strata gathers material from open sources — among them Wikipedia and Wikidata, Macrostrat, and OpenStreetMap — and uses AI to compose it into a narrative about a place. These narratives are generated by AI, not verified by a person. They can be incomplete, can misdate an event, and can be confidently wrong. Passages marked "period context" are general background about an era, not records of your exact spot. Every report says so at its foot.

Treat a dig report as a well-read starting point, not a source. Do not rely on it for anything that matters — property, safety, legal, financial or academic decisions. Follow the citations.

Your account

The app creates an anonymous account for you automatically; you may sign in with Apple so your journal follows you to a new phone. Keep control of your Apple ID — anyone with it can reach your journal. You may delete your account at any time from Settings → Data and privacy.

What costs money, and what does not

Digging ground somebody has already dug is free and unlimited. Digging new ground is metered, because each new report costs real money to produce.

Prices are shown in the app in your local currency, include any tax Apple collects on our behalf, and vary by country. The price shown at the moment you buy is the price that applies.

Subscriptions, renewal and cancelling

Only Strata Unlimited renews. The Traveler Pass and dig credits are one-off purchases that never renew and never charge you again.

Strata Unlimited renews automatically each year unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Your Apple Account is charged for the renewal within 24 hours of the end of the period, at the price then shown.

Cancel in iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. All purchases are handled by Apple and charged to your Apple Account; we never see your card. Unused allowance does not roll over or convert to cash.

We may change prices or allowances. A change never affects a period you have already paid for, and we will tell you before a renewal at a new price.

Refunds, and cancelling a purchase

Apple is the seller for purchases made in the app, and refunds are Apple's to give under Apple's policies. Ask for one at reportaproblem.apple.com.

If you are a consumer in the European Union, the United Kingdom or another place with an equivalent right, you normally have fourteen days to withdraw from a purchase of digital content. Because a dig report is delivered immediately, that right ends once delivery begins with your agreement — which is what buying and then digging amounts to. Nothing in this section takes away a right you have under the consumer law where you live, and if that law gives you a better remedy than Apple's policy, you keep it.

Using it fairly

Do not attempt to bypass the metering, automate the app, resell access, or overload the service. We may suspend accounts doing so.

Content and credit

Source material remains the property of its authors and carries its own licence — Wikipedia and Wikidata contributors' work is used under CC BY-SA, and is credited in the app under Settings → About → Sources and licences. The app itself, its design and its writing are ours. Reports you share are yours to share.

No warranty, and what we owe you

Strata is provided as it is, without warranty of any kind. We do not promise it will always be available, accurate, or free of faults. To the fullest extent the law allows, our total liability to you is limited to what you have paid us in the twelve months before the claim.

Nothing here removes rights you have under the consumer law where you live. If you are a consumer in the European Union, that includes your right to a product that conforms to what was described, and our liability for death, personal injury or fraud is never limited.

Ending it

You may stop using Strata and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or end access if these terms are broken.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Alabama, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute arising from them will be brought in the state or federal courts sitting in Alabama, and you and we consent to the jurisdiction of those courts.

If you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory law of the country you live in, and it does not stop you bringing proceedings there. Consumers in the European Union may also use the European Commission's online dispute resolution platform.

Changes

If these terms change we will update this page and the date above.
